River Reports:September 2008 This summer has been the most consistent in terms of water levels and fishing techniques as any I can remember. Everyday we have flows from Bull Shoals Dam that allow access to any part of the river with a boat. Fishing from the boat is still the most effective way hit the best spots but just for change in pace we have been finding more and more places to get out and do some wade fishing. S.J. worms are the go to flies and have been all summer but with clearer water and fall closing in, midges, sow bugs, and various beadhead nymphs make good droppers. Top water activity has been hit-and-miss this year but September always seems to be the best hopper month so we will see how it goes in the next few weeks. The fish are in the best shape I have seen them in since the last high water year. They have had plenty of good cold water all summer long and that should put them in great condition for their fall spawning runs. Some of the browns we are catching are already starting to show their fall colors. This is the beginning of my favorite time of the year on the river. I am really looking forward to cooler temps and friends coming over to fish. Tight lines, Marc Also look for current reports at Mountain River Fly Shop and the Fly Fishing Conditions site.
